We normally wouldn’t take note of the opening of a film screening gallery in  Newark Liberty Airport. Except this one is being inaugurated with a 6-minute, 3D black-and-white art film celebrating the city of Newark that was created by a pair of  Emmy-nominated Newark filmmakers with a knack for mining local stories.

“New Work: Newark in 3-D,’’ by husband-and wife filmmakers Marylou and Jerome Bongiorno, was inspired by Manhatta, America’s first avant-garde film, and will be exhibited through Jan. 10 to international travelers  in Terminal B. In addition, the film’s trailer is being shown on the Welcome Center Monitors in all terminals.

An open house for the exhibit is set for Friday, Jan. 3 Jan 10 at 2 p.m. in the Terminal B gallery. If you’re interested in attending, you’ll need to undergo a security screening and you must submit your name and birthdate by Friday, Jan. 3  today – Friday, Dec. 27 — to bonpix@verizon.net.

“New Work: Newark in 3D” was originally commissioned and acquired by the Newark Museum for its 2009 centennial celebration. It is the first art film to be shown at the airport. To learn more about the making of the film, click here.
