Associate Editor, Game Plan – Digital Job (posted 8/31/2015)
Location: New York, NY, USA
Company: Bloomberg
Job Requisition Number:47041

The Role:
Bloomberg is looking for an associate editor to cover the careers beat for Game Plan, a new and growing section of Bloomberg Business dedicated to everything ambitious young people need to get ahead. The section showcases deeply-sourced reporting on the world of higher education, smart and useful news about how to launch and advance your career, and the assorted other stuff striving millennials are thinking about.

We’re obsessed with what’s stressing young people out, both while they’re in college — whether it’s a student debt protest or their textbook budget — and after (the generation gap with real estate agents who want their business, what’s changing about applying to law school, why they can’t sleep, whether co-working spaces are a racket, and, oh yeah, that pesky student debt again).

Who you are:
– The associate editor will report and write regular stories, edit the work of junior reporters and provide other support to the team’s editor. You should be excited by the challenge of wearing these different hats (and seamlessly switching between them).
– You have proven talent as a reporter and at least some editing experience.
– Versatile: you can do quick-hit news analysis, reported pieces mined from deep sourcing, as well as longer-lead enterprise stories
– You can write and edit a smart and addictive weekly newsletter, manage Game Plan’s social media profiles, and find and join relevant conversations on and off the site.
– You have, or can develop, a robust and authoritative beat that includes but isn’t limited to: salaries across industries, navigating a new career and the vagaries of office culture, managing stress at work, innovative careers and job paths, and workplace discrimination.
– You write with a distinctive voice that’s irreverent but stops short of snarky, and
have an authoritative, informed point of view.

More things you should be able to do:
– Know, or know how to find out, what ambitious students and young professionals in their 20s and 30s are talking about in public and not-so-public spheres.
– Regularly break, expose or highlight news that’s relevant to this group, even if it may feel tangential to other Bloomberg readers.
– Be endlessly interested in the decisions, crises, anxieties and diversions that preoccupy young people on path through college and into the workforce
– Have an uncanny ability to spot stories EVERYWHERE and execute them quickly
– Have 3-5 years of reporting experience, a track record of very clean copy and above-average reporting skills, and a smart and engaging voice.

The Company:
Bloomberg, the global business and financial information and news leader, gives influential decision makers a critical edge by connecting them to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas. The company’s strength – delivering data, news and analytics through innovative technology, quickly and accurately – is at the core of the Bloomberg Professional service, which provides real time financial information to more than 315,000 subscribers globally. Bloomberg’s enterprise solutions build on the company’s core strength, leveraging technology to allow customers to access, integrate, distribute and manage data and information across organizations more efficiently and effectively. Through Bloomberg Law, Bloomberg Government, Bloomberg New Energy Finance and Bloomberg BNA, the company provides data, news and analytics to decision makers in industries beyond finance. And Bloomberg News, delivered through the Bloomberg Professional service, television, radio, mobile, the Internet and three magazines, Bloomberg Businessweek, Bloomberg Markets and Bloomberg Pursuits, covers the world with more than 2,400 news and multimedia professionals at more than 150 bureaus in 73 countries. Headquartered in New York, Bloomberg employs more than 15,000 people in 192 locations around the world.

Associate Editor–The Hedge Fund Law Report (posted 8/31/2015)
Editorial | New York, United States

Send Jobvite

The Hedge Fund Law Report (HFLR) is, by common consensus, the leading information resource focused on the legal, regulatory, compliance and operational aspects of the hedge fund industry. Since 2008, the HFLR has been tackling legal questions with business consequences via “expertise-based journalism” – a combination of trenchant reporting and proprietary legal expertise. We identify the most effective ways of handling the hardest questions facing the hedge fund industry, and we describe such “best practices” for our subscribers in articles that are rigorously structured, deeply researched and crystal clear. Subscribers – key decision-makers at hedge fund managers, prime brokers, institutional investors and law and accounting firms – rely on the HFLR to identify issues, mitigate regulatory risk and perform their day-to-day jobs more effectively.

The HFLR was acquired in July 2014 by the Mergermarket Group, a transaction that has given us the resources to deepen our editorial bench, enhance our technology, develop our product and expand geographically. We are looking for an Associate Editor to help drive this growth – to help take the HFLR from great to even greater. This is a visible role not only within our company, but also in the broader hedge fund industry, which looks to the HFLR as a barometer of best practices. The role calls for a uniquely outstanding individual – a star performer – and the remuneration is commensurate with the stature of the role.

Following is a fuller description of the Associate Editor role and characteristics likely to yield success in it.

Junior Tech Reporter — NYC (posted 8/31/2015)

The Verge is a new kind of online publication with an emphasis on living in the future.  We’re looking for a New York-based reporter who’s hungry to write tech news with accuracy, speed, and strong angles. This person will join a team of fellow writers who excel in a fast-paced environment, have a broad knowledge of current events, and can write quickly, accurately, and in a voice that fits The Verge.

We want someone looking to write in a fast-paced journalism setting who has an interest in a range of subjects — primarily technology, but able to converse about science, pop culture, design, and more. Bonus points if you’re a major nerd about one (or more) of those areas, and can contribute additional expertise and enthusiastic ideas to those realms. You’ll be responsible for contributing multiple news stories a day, and offering readers a mix of breaking news, original reporting, and photo essays, all written with the right tone (a sense of humor, where appropriate, is vital). Extra bonus points if you’ve got photography skills. This is an intense, demanding position, but one that’ll be hugely rewarding for the right person — someone who lives and breathes writing news, and is excited at the idea of reaching an audience of more than 20 million people each month. Are you that person? We want to hear from you.

Responsibilities

  • Write and publish several pieces on a daily basis, ranging from quick 400-word items to photo galleries to tracking the latest on a breaking news event
  • Come up with fresh, sharp angles on the day’s news and offer smart opinions that complement the straight news and offer new insights for readers
  • Report news out as necessary, on tight deadlines, which includes making calls, asking tough questions, and pursuing a story aggressively
  • Participate in local or global event coverage, as required

Requirements

  • Commute daily to our New York office
  • A generalist news sensibility, with a range of interests that span technology, science, culture, art, design, and politics (nerdy appreciation for one or more of these topics is great)
  • Knowledge and familiarity with online publishing tools and HTML
  • An ability to write quickly and accurately in a high-pressure environment

Fall 2015 Reporting Internship with The Wall Street Journal’s Global Real Estate Bureau
10-Week Internship (full time during those 10 weeks)
New York City
Application deadline: 7/1/15

Job description and how to apply:
The Wall Street Journal’s global real estate bureau is seeking an intern who is eager to learn about the economics, business and investing aspects of residential and commercial real estate. This is wonderful opportunity to write about one of the most popular subjects with readers: the housing market. Some stories can simply take the temperate of the housing market to see what’s hot and what’s not. But other stories can dive deeper into economic and demographic data to discover interesting trends about home purchases and valuation, lingering foreclosure problems and the increasing role that investors play in the housing market. We also envision the intern tackling stories about the rental market.  Indeed, as the U.S. shifts from a nation fixated on home ownership toward a nation of renters, there are plenty of stories to write about the implications of this trend.

Interns should be self-starters who understand the needs of the paper’s growing readership on various platforms.  Dedication to high journalism standards, creative thinking, excellent writing skills and dogged reporting are absolute musts.  Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in news as well as the ability to work independently and under deadline pressure.
