SPJ — New Jersey Chapter
Journalism Awards for 2001

The coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11 in The Record of Hackensack, The Two River Times and The Montclair Times, including the iconic photograph that rallied a nation behind its heroes, were recognized in the 2001 annual journalism awards of the New Jersey chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The award for daily deadline reporting went to the staff of The Record for its Sept. 12 edition, headlined "Terror hits home." The photograph by Thomas E. Franklin of The Record, taken on September 11, of firefighters raising the American flag over the ruins of the World Trade Center was chosen best daily spot news photo.

The new Wilson Barto Award for outstanding achievement by a first-year reporter was won by Nicholas Clunn of the Courier News of Bridgewater.

The awards will be presented Saturday at a reception in Hackensack hosted by The Record.
